Pebbles

I was talking to my best friend over a Japanese dinner after an eventful afternoon of wedding gown selection when conversation veered towards my dog Pebbles. Or rather, it is my sister-in-law's pet that happens to become ours when she moved in with us. And Pebbles is so adorable she has to be on the wallpaper of my mobile, which is what triggered the conversation with Shirley when she saw it.

I was surprised when Shirley said that she doesn't like pebbles because she barks at her when she speaks a little too loudly. And I thought how can ANYONE not love Pebbles? She is so adorable and full of affection. It puts a smile to my face when I relate how she nudges up to me when I'm working on my laptop in front of the TV or is full of excitement when any of us comes home from work or how she gazes up in yearn and anticipation while waiting to be fed oranges or apples!

And as I speak it suddenly dawned on me what made Pebbles so lovable other than the fact that she is absolutely adorable...is that she needs you...it's so strange when you have the doggie who is so affectionate, so child-like and so in need of you that you just HAVE to love it. Even my mom who is anti-pets all her life and who still complains as she cleans up after dog poo talks to Pebbles and love her so. Not to mention my dad who is a better communicator with Pebbles then with me or my brother sometimes!

Perhaps everybody needs someone who needs them, not just as an ego-booster....that would sound way too functional, and perhaps not politically correct. It's like it brings out your nurturing instinct when someone allows you to love him/her. It's probably true and explains the "xiao2 nu3 ren2" phenomenon!
