Stories of Loss 3

There was a lady who went to see a fortune teller. She gave the fortune teller the details of a person whose fortune she wanted to know. The fortune teller looked at the details and was very uncomfortable. She did not want to tell the fortune of this person.

The lady insisted and wanted to know the fortune. The fortune teller then asked, 'why do you want to know the fortune of someone who is no longer around?' The lady then acknowledged that yes, the person was her son and is no longer around. He had committed suicide. He had been a good boy and had never given his family any trouble. The lady wanted very badly to make sense of what was happening.

The fortune teller then told her that he left because his purpose has been served. He may have owed her in their past lives and his purpose in this life is to repay the kindness to her. And when the purpose has been served, it is also time to go. And this is how the fortune teller helped the lady to make sense of her loss.

Stories of Loss 2

Once upon a time, there was a framemaker. One day, when he opened his tool drawer, he saw a snake. It wasn't big, its length was just about the width of his shoulders. Instinctively, without much thought, he pulled out a hammer and hammered at the snake. He hammered it until it bled and died.

Shortly after, his wife got pregnant and his son was born, in the year of the snake. The boy grew up to be a lovable son and brother to his siblings. His siblings had said, he is one person in the family whom nobody could get angry with. He was filial, bright and talented. He loved cycling, music and excelled in his studies and in the armed forces.

However, his mother has not been well since he was born. She suffered emotionally and psychologically ever since his birth and only started getting better as the boy grew older and became a filial and loving son.

At the age of 21, the boy passed away. His father was there at the hospital when the doctors were trying to revive him. He witnessed how the doctors used the defibrillator to try to restore his heartbeat, until at the very end when the boy started bleeding.

The father then understood what he had done. When he saw what was happening he remembered years ago when he encountered the snake. He had thumped at the snake until it started bleeding, like what was happening to his son now. He felt that what happened to his son was a result of what he had done years back. It was karma, he believe. And this is how he made sense of what was happening.

Stories of Loss

It was about 5.30am when Jasper appeared. It was a little strange to see a young man clad in army uniform walk towards me in the wee hours of the morning, maybe somewhat like Antonio Exupery seeing the little prince in the sahara desert. It was way past bedtime and it felt a little dreamlike.

Jasper approached me and identified himself as Junsheng's buddy in most parts of his NS days. He even went together with him to Australia for pilot training, got axed at the same time and took the same flight back to Singapore. It was only recently that they went separate ways. He later told me that Junsheng was one of the four guys who got posted to a new unit.

He paid his respects and we sat down and talked more. There was no one else around, just him and me, and of course I would need to entertain him. He knows one of the two SAF guys around, who eventually fell asleep, I think. He was a good looking boy, a little porcelain-faced in fact. Surprising for a 21-year old who is serving the army. And when he talks about the times he shared with Junsheng, his eyes lit up, somewhat in excitement, and somewhat like he is reliving the moments as he is retelling them.

He is a good story teller. He spoke for about one to one and a half hour. He spoke of how Junsheng is the more active of the two and would always encourage him to train harder. He spoke of how he and Junsheng are on good terms with the Encik and are always well taken care by him. He said Junsheng is an audio-fanatic, who would spend more of his time and money on accumulating audio equipment, and how he would always benefit from this because he is Junsheng's buddy. He said Junsheng was a good friend and would go all the way out to help him on IT matters.

There was never a moment of sadness when he related all these. It was as though he was relishing the happy moments shared rather than pining for a lost friend. He only said that he knew that Junsheng had so much things he had wanted to do after he ORD-ed and it was a pity that these could not be fulfilled now.

As I listen to his animated young man relate all his stories about Junsheng, I feel as though I was getting to know my cousin, only through someone else's eyes. It was a very strange experience, but I was very glad that I was there when Jasper came. It was close to 7am and Jasper said he had to leave to book into camp. He bid goodbye and left. It seemed almost pre-destined that I should hear about my cousin from this very dear friend of his and I am glad that I was allowed to enter his world, albeit only for a very short while.
